Walk the back path through the rose beds when they're in bloom. Skip the front near Park Boulevard. The quiet side is dense with color and you'll have it mostly to yourself. Bring a camera. Bring it early, before the Balboa Park crowds find the good light.
San Diego Zoo

Get there when the gates open at 9. The pandas are awake, the pathways aren't yet packed, and you'll actually see animals instead of the backs of phones. Skip the midday heat and get out by 3. The zoo works best in two hours of focus, not a full day of shuffle.
