Gaslamp Quarter
Start at Fifth and F, walk the brick streets north toward the waterfront. The old storefronts and balconies matter more before 10 a.m., when the crowds aren't thick yet. By evening the gas lamps light up and you get why people came here a hundred years ago.

Order the Old Fashioned. The bartender knows the name, not because it's clever, but because the show is the drink. Gaslamp Quarter crowds mean 9pm is quieter than 7. Come after the tourists eat.
Monzu Fresh Pasta

Order the pappardelle or whatever's fresh that day. Tables fill fast around 7, so come at 5:45 or after 8:30. The pasta sits on the counter in the window. Watch them roll it while you wait for a table. That's half the dinner.
Freddy’s Chophouse

Order the dry-aged ribeye, medium rare. The bar has a view of Fourth Avenue street life. It's a steakhouse doing steakhouse things, and it does them well. Reservation required, and they book out weeks ahead. Come hungry.
