The band shell is the actual draw here, not the open grass. Walk the perimeter at 7am or 5:30pm when the light hits the bay differently. Benches face the water. Bring coffee from somewhere else. Nobody's fighting for shade.

Start at the Hotel del Coronado and walk the beach south toward the ferry landing. The curve of sand gets emptier the further you go. By the concrete pier you'll understand why locals don't talk about this place much. Keep it that way.
