Balboa Park Carousel
Go early on a weekday if you want to ride without a twenty-minute line. The horses are hand-carved, the organ plays actual rolls, and at forty cents a spin it's the cheapest nostalgia in the park. One loop is enough.

Walk the back path through the rose beds when they're in bloom. Skip the front near Park Boulevard. The quiet side is dense with color and you'll have it mostly to yourself. Bring a camera. Bring it early, before the Balboa Park crowds find the good light.
