Skip the crowded Desert Garden. Walk the Rose section at 10 a.m., when the light hits the blooms right and you have the pathways mostly to yourself. The benches are good for sitting. Nobody photographs roses this far into Balboa Park.

Walk the back path through the rose beds when they're in bloom. Skip the front near Park Boulevard. The quiet side is dense with color and you'll have it mostly to yourself. Bring a camera. Bring it early, before the Balboa Park crowds find the good light.
